Couple Success Stories

Cindy & Nate

We received a contact through our Parent Profiles website on Tuesday, March 28th. The e-mail indicated that a birthmom named Amber thought we looked like a great couple and that she would love to hear from us. I e-mailed her back immediately but the e-mail was bounced back indicating an inaccurate e-mail address. I figured that Amber had transposed some letters in her e-mail address so I made the correction and re-sent the e-mail. Luckily this time it went through.

I told her that we would love to talk with her too and asked if she would share a little about herself. She sent another e-mail the next day indicating that she was 17 years old and that she was pregnant with a baby boy due May 1st. She indicated that the baby was bi-racial, she being Caucasian and the birthfather being African American. She said if that was okay with us to let her know. We wrote her back immediately and said we would love to talk to her and encouraged her to call us on our toll free number.

The first time Amber called I was out shopping at the local book store (looking for books about bi-racial adoption...I wanted to be prepared!) I had forwarded our home phones to my cell phone and when the phone rang I accidentally hung up before I could answer! I was just hoping she would call back!! She did call back right away and we talked for about an hour while I sat in my car in the parking lot. I knew that she was really special and that I would love to have her be a part of our family. I encouraged her to call back in the evening so she could speak with my husband Nate.

She called back that night just as scheduled and spoke with Nate for about an hour. She said she really liked us and wondered what would be the next step. We encouraged her to contact our adoption agency (IAC) and do an intake with a counselor. She was a bit nervous and hesitant at doing this because she had been working with an agency in her home state. She wasn't quite satisfied with the families they had shown her so she logged onto the internet. We were the only people she had contacted!! She said she'd think about it and let us know.

The next day I received a call from our agency informing me that Amber had called and done an intake. She had also arranged for her proof of pregnancy to be sent. This indicated to me that things were looking good!! Amber called later that evening to let us know she had decided that she really liked us but felt like she needed to do her research. The agency in her home town had two more profiles to show her and she felt she owed them a look. This was Thursday, March 30th and she had arranged to see the other profiles the following Monday. We were to be out of town at a friend's baby shower over the weekend. We decided to talk on Monday or Tuesday.

When we returned home from our trip I sent Amber an e-mail on Monday afternoon just touching base with her. She wrote me back late on Monday and indicated that she may call on Tuesday. Well....Tuesday morning April 5th at 9am I received a call from Amber.....SHE WAS IN LABOR!!! She had never looked at the other profiles on Monday and had rescheduled the appointment for Tuesday. When she woke up Tuesday morning her water broke. She wanted us to be the parents of her baby boy!!!

I called Nate and work and we packed our bags and drove to the airport to catch the first flight out of San Diego. We ended up having all sorts of delays and missed connections and didn't get to our destination until around midnight. Amber and her mom Janet still wanted us to come to the hospital even though it was so late. It was our first meeting with Amber, her mom and our new son!! Benjamin Daniel Huff was born while we were flying in a plane at 7:14pm. Everyone felt so much better once we had met.

The next several days we spent at the hospital visiting with everyone. Amber was very emotional but was determined to follow through with her adoption plan. The day of discharge was also the day relinquishments were to be signed. It was tough for everyone and there were lots of tears!! We took our son "home" to our hotel that night. We were in town for several more days and had the pleasure of spending time with Amber and her whole family. We took lots of photos and had good opportunity to get to know one another. It was very good for us all.

We returned home to San Diego about a week later. We feel so fortunate to have both Benjamin and Amber as a part of our lives. She is such a remarkable and mature young woman. We keep in touch regularly via e-mail and telephone. Amber has sent us a painting she painted for Ben's room and so many nice notes and cards. She plans to attend college and wants to take art classes. She is very talented. We were very happy with the exposure we received on the Parent Profiles website. We feel very comfortable recommending it to waiting families.
