It was only 4 months from the time we activated our profile until we were contacted by our birth-mom. We loved the freedom that parent profiles allow us...updating new pictures, our journal, and even changing our profile story if we wanted. Logging on allowed us to see how often our profile was being looked at...as the numbers rose, we felt like we were moving closer to an adoption. Our first contact more ...

Birthing Center

Birthing Centers - An Alternative to Hospital Deliveries

For many women, the thought of giving birth to their precious baby in the anonymity and processed environment of a normal busy hospital, a birthing center could give the perfect alternative. A certified birthing center offers the opportunity for pregnant women to take greater control of their pregnancy care and creating the kind of environment they prefer for labor and delivery.

After seven years of marriage, we are excited about adding a new child to our family. We have always talked of having a family since the first day we met, but we could not start one of our own and that has led us to seek an adoption plan.

When choosing a birthing center, ensure that it is certified by the appropriate governing medical bodies so that you know that there will be qualified staff to take care of you and your baby. Although it isn't something you might want to consider, ensure that the birthing center is close to a regular hospital just in case any unforeseen complications arise during labor and delivery, and what the procedure is for transferring women in labor should this happen. Does the midwife from the birthing center remain at your side even at the mainstream hospital for example? Check references from mothers who have given birth there, and if possible, seek the opinion of the local hospital's maternity department, so ensure that you are putting yourself into good hands. Although most insurance companies will cover you using a birthing center for your pregnancy care and labor and delivery, you will need to check whether or not your policy covers the birthing center of your choice before making your final decision.

A birthing center allows you to plan for your baby's birth and delivery environment - for example, who you want to be present, whether you wish to walk around during labor, what positions you prefer for giving birth, and even the small things that can sometimes be important at times of stress such as what you wear and eat can be at your discretion. Birthing centers usually welcome mothers who want to have natural child birth, and those who choose to breast feed and are experienced to help you if this is the kind of birth you desire.

Although they are not usually equipped to deal with complications in pregnancy, if everything is going well, a certified birthing center will help you to have the kind of birth experience you've dreamed of.
