Circumcision

Deciding About Circumcision

You may not realize that circumcision is a choice, not necessarily something that you have to have done to your male child. There are reasons for it and reasons against it. In some cases, it is a religious need while in others having a circumcision is completely against the religion. What you need to realize is that you need to make an informed decision about circumcision. The best way to do that is to learn both sides of the story and then decide for yourself.

Circumcision is the removal of all or some of the foreskin of the penis. In many cases, this is something your doctor just will do but you need to realize that it is your decision to make.

Reasons For:

Many religious groups practice circumcision as a method of ceremony within their traditional beliefs.
It may need to be done to treat penile cancer as well as other health concerns.
In some cases, it has been shown to lower the chances of getting HPV infection and some sexually transmitted diseases. These are not necessarily proven cases though.
It can be done as a means of body modification for no reason at all.

Against it:

Many believe there to be no real need for it medically speaking.
Others believe that it is against their religious practices.
Still others think that it is cruel and painful to the child.
Some children do die from the procedure going wrong.
If the individual does require a circumcision later on in life, many believe it to be less traumatic when it is chosen at an older age.

On the web, you will find some excellent resources that will provide you with detailed information about how circumcision is done. You can watch videos of children being circumcised to help you make your decision. Throughout the world, there are only three countries that provide routine circumcision to infant boys. They are the United States, South Korea and the Philippines.

Nevertheless, the ultimate decision is yours. It is something that you should talk to your doctor about well ahead of time as well so that the proper planning can be done.
