Edema

Edema

Swollen hands and feet are a common occurrence for many women in late pregnancy. Such fluid accumulation, known as edema, is due to excess blood that is circulating in the mom's body. A growing uterus can put pressure on the veins in your pelvic area and slow down circulation, causing blood to pool in the extremities. Excessive salt intake can help aggravate the condition even further. Such symptoms may be more pronounced after a long day of being on your feet, or if you were particularly busy and didn't have a lot of time to stop and rest.

So what is a mom to do if they experience a bit of puffiness? Here are some tips to minimize this uncomfortable side effect of pregnancy.

- Elevate your feet- particularly during the evening hours when swelling is at its worst.
- Wear support stockings- try to put them on before you get out of bed in the morning, so that the blood doesn't have a chance to start to pool.
- Stay hydrated- many women steer clear of extra fluids thinking that it helps. That is incorrect- drink your way to less edema.
- Exercise daily- this will help improve circulation.
- Avoid salty foods- make sure to read the labels on all food products. Many have hidden sodium.

It is important to remember that any excessive swelling that happens quickly or results in rapid weight gain could be a sign of something more serious. If you experience anything out of the ordinary- make sure to mention it to your doctor so that you can be tested and treated for preeclampsia if that is indeed the problem.
