Exercises for Health and Mobility During Pregnancy

Back Pain is a frequent complaint during most pregnancies, especially as expectant moms begin to slow down and become less physically active, so exercises are very important to maintain health and mobility. Moderate exercises have also been shown to lessen the chance of developing pregnancy diabetes. Let's examine some low impact exercises that can help keep you fit and mobile throughout your pregnancy.

Walking is one of the easiest exercises for maintaining health during pregnancy and anytime throughout your life. Wear a good pair of walking shoes to promote good posture.

Swimming exercises are also wonderful for pregnant women because the water supports her body weight and takes the strain off muscles and ligaments. Swimming laps and treading water are safe exercises for pregnant women.

There are also certain exercises that can bring direct relief for pregnancy related back pain. These exercises are usually performed while lying on your back. Take turns bending the knee and gently pulling your leg toward your belly 5 times, then repeat with the other leg. Then repeat the same exercises while pulling both legs toward your belly at the same time. These exercises gently stretch your lower back muscles and bring some relief to sciatic nerve pain.

It is generally recommended that pregnant women with no known health problems or complications should complete 30 minutes of gentle exercises each day to help them maintain good health and mobility throughout their pregnancy. Consult your OB for more appropriate exercises to use during your pregnancy.
