Are you pregnant? Are you hoping to adopt?
Finding the Right Support GroupPreparing emotionally to place your child for adoption can be a difficult journey. It is a journey of heartache, sadness, and fear of the unknown. While there are many resources available to you as you emotionally prepare, one of those resources is a support group. One of the many great things about considering a support group is the sheer accessibility and availability. But it's also a reason it can be so difficult to choose a support group--you have so many choices that it may become a little overwhelming.

While it can be overwhelming, there are ways to narrow your search. When looking for the right support group, consider these points:
- Referrals and Recommendations: Ask your friends and family for referrals or recommendations. If they don't have any ask the hospital, an adoption professional, or your local government. They should be able to give you a list of local support groups. You can also turn your search to the internet. A simple internet search will yield countless results.
- Vicinity: When searching for the right support group, it is important to find one close to your home or work. You want to have it easily accessible and nearby so that you'll actually go. Sometimes it is easy to find excuses to not attend your meetings, but the location shouldn't even be a factor. Not only that, but it will reduce the stress in your life if your support group is close by and you don't have to deal with traffic.
- Resources: What resources are available to the support group? Is it supported by the city? Supported by a professional? Do they have a budget to buy materials and other things that will help its members heal and find support without fees to the members?
- Experience Level: In any given support group there will be a varying degree of experience. Find the level that works best for you. Do you want the majority of the support group members to be in exactly your situation? Do you prefer to have some support group members past the point you are currently and in the middle of their healing journey?
- Support Group Leader: It is important to trust, respect, and like your support group leader. Is your support group leader professional? Does s/he make you feel comfortable? Is the leader non-judgmental? All of these questions are crucial to your healing.
- Membership Fee: Do not join a support group with a membership fee. You should always be able to find ones that are free to the public through the city and the hospital. This is very crucial to keep in mind when determining which support group is right for you.
- Meeting Frequency and Duration: Just like location, how often the meetings take place and how long they last is very important to consider. You have to make sure it fits into your schedule without too much hassle. Jam-packing your schedule can lead to increased levels of stress. Leave yourself enough time to get there and back in the time you need.
Finding a support group can be an overwhelming thing. But, it is possible and you can find the perfect support group. Soon, you'll be on your way to emotionally healing and building a strong, sturdy support system around you. You will make some life-long friends that will love and support you. It's time to give yourself the opportunity to heal and move forward with life.
