Getting the Most Out of Counseling

Getting the Most Out of Counseling

Receiving counseling is a great option for those dealing with emotional setbacks after placing a child for adoption. It's normal to feel the emotional sting after such a large and life-changing decision. That emotional sting can be stifling, overwhelming, and suffocating. Counseling is a great way to deal with those emotions and understand them fully. Understanding your emotions is the first step to healing and finding joy, happiness, and hope.

Hello, and welcome to our family! Our hearts go out to you and the decisions you are facing. Please take some time to read and get to know our family and the love our new daughter will share.

Because every person is different, not every counselor will be the right fit for everyone. In order to get the most out of your experience, you need to find the right counselor for you--one with whom you feel comfortable and secure. In order to get the most out of your counseling experience, consider the following:

  • Research: While considering multiple counseling professionals, it is important to do your research. First, ask for referrals from support group members, family, friends, and your local community. Use online directories or online listings to narrow your search. Once you have narrowed your potentials, meet with them one-on-one to get a better feel of which counselor works best for you. Feel free to ask all the questions you have. The only way to know which counselor is right for you is to get to know his/her practices and professional beliefs.
  • Open Up: Once you have chosen a counseling professional, the next step is to open up and be completely honest about your experiences, your emotions, your fears, and your hopes. It is impossible for anyone to help you effectively if s/he isn't aware of the specifics. Opening up will not only help your counselor understand your situation but it will help you to heal and provide you with the life path to move forward and progress.
  • Complete Tasks: Depending on the type of counselor you choose, you may have some tasks each week to complete on your own--directly relating to your healing journey. While some may seem trivial or too difficult, do them. They have been assigned to you for a reason. You'll most likely find that they are worth it in the end. Through these tasks, you'll learn more about yourself, how to accept your decisions, and how to move on through your life with a hopeful and happy outlook.

Move Forward: After all is said and done, the most important person in this process is you. You have to be willing to work and share. You need the commitment to see this journey to the end. Move forward and find happiness and peace in your life, and remember that it is possible.
