Pregnancy at 20-30

Pregnancy at 20-30: Prime Baby Time

Though modern medicine is making is possible for women to have healthy babies later and later in life, pregnancy at 20-30 has some definite advantages over other points in your life.

In your 20's, your risk of infertility, miscarriage, and health problems are the lowest they'll ever be. These are your most fertile years, making pregnancy at 20-30 easier to accomplish than it ever will be again. Your periods are probably regular, and most important, most of them are ovulatory - that is, an egg will probably be released each month. The average woman in her early 20's has about a 20% chance of conceiving each month when she has unprotected sex.

Pregnancy at 20-30 is probably the healthiest time for you. Your risk of hypertension and gestational diabetes is low. In fact, women in their 20's have only about half the risk of gestational diabetes as women in their 40's - low enough that the American Diabetes Association has suggested eliminating the once routine test for gestational diabetes in women aged 25 or under.

In your 20's you're likely to be the most fit you'll ever be. This means that those who experience pregnancy at 20-30 will often find delivery and postpartum weight loss easier. Additionally, if you start having children in your 20's, you may be increasing your protection against future problems such as breast and ovarian cancers. The theory is that the increases in estrogen and progesterone that accompany ovulation may raise the risks of these cancers. The more often you're pregnant, the less often you ovulate.

Emotionally, the 20's are often a time of great change for women - finishing school, finding a life partner, establishing a career. How you feel about pregnancy at 20-30 may depend on how far along you are with these other life tasks. In your early 20's, you may be focusing on your marriage, job, etc. A baby at this point could feel like an intrusion. On the other hand, many women find it immensely rewarding to have their children early and then turn their attention to themselves in their 30's. By the late 20's, many women are more established in their careers and marriages, and feel that this is the optimal time to have a baby.
