A lot of women who become pregnant would have previously died without their morning coffee. Now carrying precious cargo, they have to ask the question whether or not caffeine is okay during their pregnancy.
Most doctors will tell you that it is not completely necessary to give up caffeine altogether when you are pregnant. Like most things when you are pregnant or nursing, caffeine should be taken in moderation.
Some recent studies have links problems such as birth defects, low birth weight and even miscarriage to large amounts of caffeine introduced during pregnancy. Caffeine has no nutritional value, supplying no vitamins or minerals whatsoever. The only property caffeine has is being a stimulant which can increase your metabolism and heart rate. While this can help get you going in the morning, it also puts stress on your developing baby.
Another downside of caffeine while you are pregnant is that it hinders your ability to absorb iron, which any physician will tell you is a necessary nutrient for you and your developing fetus. In addition to this, other much needed fluids can be lost along with calcium due to caffeine, which can also be harmful to your pregnancy.
When trying to be sure to limit your caffeine intake during pregnancy, there are several things that you should consider. Caffeine lurks often in places where you would least expect it. Even though you may crave a piece of chocolate, you should be careful about your intake due the fact that some chocolate contains caffeine. Other unsuspecting places caffeine can be found are in some non-herbal teas, and over the counter drugs including cold and headache remedies and even allergy medicines. Because of this, you should always be sure to follow your physician in their advice on what medicines you should take or stay away from.
With thought and consideration, and above all, moderation where caffeine is concerned, you should be on your through a health pregnancy. That is, if you can stay awake long enough without that cup of coffee in the morning!
