Adoption in Progress.
Introduction to Us
Thank you very much for taking the time to learn more about us. We know that you are facing many crucial decisions right now, and we appreciate the consideration you are giving to the adoption process in general and to us in particular. While it is hard to condense our lives into this short profile, we hope that something here strikes a chord with you and that we will have the opportunity to learn more about each other soon!
Our relationship is very fulfilling, and we are eager to bring children into our little family. Over the past few years, we discovered that we are unable to do this on our own. This experience has been very humbling and taught us a lot about ourselves: our strengths, weaknesses and capacity for faith. The opportunity to adopt has been a great blessing in our lives and brought us a large measure of peace and hope. Matt’s Native American heritage and our appreciation for cultural and ethnic diversity have led us to consider adoption of American Indian children and children of other races. Our families and friends are very excited about the prospect of adoption and will help us create a warm and welcoming environment for a wonderful little child.
As we have thought and prayed about our roles as parents, we have come to a clearer understanding of the values on which we hope to build our family. Most importantly, we want our children to understand God’s love for them and to develop love and respect for Him, all His children and His beautiful creations. As part of this process we hope to instill a sense of joy, gratitude and tolerance, as well as a love of learning and a desire for continual improvement. We will take every opportunity to teach them, offering consistent guidance, and setting a good example. We are grateful for the way that our parents taught us to be independent and make decisions, and we hope to pass this on to our own children.
We both believe that whatever else we do in our lives, raising children will be our priority. Sarah is excited to devote herself fulltime to raising a child. We both have fond memories of fun and engaged parents and siblings who took the time to show us their love and affection. We are excited to share these experiences and create these relationships with a child of our own.
Activities we love
Regardless of what we are doing, our favorite activities are things that we can to do together. We love to joke and laugh with each other.
We love spending time outside whenever we can - hiking, camping, going to the beach, and going on walks. We also enjoy watching movies and talking with our families and friends. Traveling is one of our favorite activies. We have been to England, France, Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Greece, Turkey, Japan, Barbados, Bermuda and throughout the United States. We also enjoy running: we ran a marathon together a few years ago and are training for another one now.
Matt says:
"I enjoy music of all different types, but especially classcial music and jazz. Sarah and I have season tickets to the local symphony orchestra. I also love to sing, and I sang in the concert choir in college. I particularly enjoy singing church hymns and other sacred music. I play the piano a little bit and am learning to play the violin.
"I like to keep in shape. I do this by running regularly with Sarah. I also enjoy lifting weights, swimming and yoga.
"I am a big fan of all sorts of outdoor acitivities, such as hiking and camping. I was an Eagle Scout and am currently a volunteer leader for the Boy Scouts.
"Indoor activities that I enjoy are reading both fiction and non-fiction, as well as watching movies. I am usually reading several books at the same time (but not making a lot of progress on any of them). I am quite a movie buff. Recently, I have been watching a lot of documentary films, which I really enjoy. Sarah and I won an Oscar prediction contest three years in a row."
Sarah says:
"I have been an avid reader since kindergarten - fiction, non-fiction, poetry, magazines, newspapers, cereal boxes... anything, really. Matt and I often read to each other. When I worked in the nursery at my church, I enjoyed reading to the kids, even if it was the same books over and over!
"I enjoy exploring the world around me. Some of my favorite outdoor activities are hikes, campouts and picnics with family and friends. I love playing in the ocean and have even learned to surf! I also like visiting art and history museums.
"I started running with my Dad before my freshman year in high school and have been running ever since. I'm not really competative, but I have finished a couple of marathons and look forward to running some more.
"I am a novice guitar player with a goal of getting good enough to play around a campfire - It'll happen soon!
"I also love to cook. I enjoy preparing food for casual get-togethers and special occasions - good food and good conversation is one of my favorite combinations."
Our Family
Although we went to the same high school, we did not really meet until we attended college together on the other side of the country. We started dating right before Sarah left for a junior year abroad. During this time apart, we emailed each other daily and continued to discover not only how much we had in common, but also how much we had to share with and learn from each other. Sarah fell for Matt’s sense of humor, intelligence, loyalty, and sincerity. Matt could not resist Sarah’s integrity, independence, and her sense of wonder at the world around her. We were married right after graduating in 1999.
Both of us studied international relations in college and love learning about and exploring other cultures, both in our own country and abroad. Matt is a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and has a strong interest in Native American culture and history. Matt learned German on his LDS mission and Sarah became fluent in French as an exchange student in high school. Sarah also studied in Eastern Europe in college.
Matt graduated from law school in 2004 and Sarah graduated from law school in 2006. Matt is currently practicing law at a large law firm, and Sarah is working as an employment law attorney for a government agency. Two lawyers in one family might sound a little scary, but we really are very friendly!
We both come from wonderful and supportive families.
Matt says:
"My parents are both entrepenuers. My mom owns and operates a small chain of retail home accessory stores. My dad runs his own landscaping business. Both of my parents have taught me the value of hard work.
"My older brother is a real outdoorsman. He is a nature photographer and loves to travel to remote natural settings. We love to spend time hiking together when we get the chance."
Sarah says:
"If my family had a theme, it would be continual learning and mutual support.
"My father is a sculptor who recently got a degree in nursing and my mother is a laboratory researcher and manager who got her bachelors degree and an MBA after taking time to raise our family. In addition to caring for their own children, my parents have always made room for foster children and exchange students in their home.
"My three younger siblings and I are spread coast to coast and beyond and have interests that vary as widely. Though far apart, we stay in regular contact with each other and love spending vacations together.
"As a family, we love to travel, watch movies, read, and cook."
