Eric & Nancy are hopeful adoptive parents from New York waiting to adopt a baby.
If you are pregnant and considering placing your child for adoption, please read the following Dear Birthmother Letter.

Dear Birthmother,
We are so happy that through adoption we may be able to realize our dream of building a family. We want you to know how much we will love and cherish your child for all of our lives. We promise that he or she will grow up in a safe, nurturing, supporting environment, surrounded by loving family and friends.

About Us
We first met in 2002, in a meeting at work which neither one of us wanted to attend. We both felt an instant attraction to one and other, and our professional connection quickly changed into a deeply personal, loving relationship, built on a strong foundation and based on mutual respect, love, and humor. We were married in the fall of 2003. But even before we were married we talked about the children in our lives and how much we adore them, and how we wanted to have a family of our own.
About Nancy
Nancy has worked in the computer center at a nearby college for many years, and is now an Associate Director. She and her staff are responsible for installing, supporting, and improving classroom technologies, and she also oversees the daily operations of the campus Help Desk. Nancy has a wry sense of humor, which she uses to build a sense of teamwork among the people she works with. In her spare time she enjoys cooking, spending time with family and friends, and catching up on General Hospital.
Nancy has already been approved to be on family leave until our little one can happily spend part of the day at the wonderful infant center which is available on campus. The infant center is highly recommended, and it is close enough for Nancy to stop by during the day for a quick visit.
About Eric
Eric is a physicist. He got interested in science in grade school when he started doing experiments in the basement. After majoring in both math and physics in college he went on to get a Ph.D. in theoretical particle physics from Yale. Because of his work he's lived all over the U.S., with a few years spent in Canada. He's visited Europe many times for conferences and to give lectures. But after moving to New York and meeting Nancy he is happy to finally be settled in one place, and he's excited at the prospect of starting a family.
Eric is now working on a project related to a cutting-edge physics experiment which is expected to verify a prediction of one of Einstein's theories. It may also open up an entirely new branch of astronomy. His part of the project is designed to help improve science education in the U.S. Luckily, he is able to do almost all of this via an Internet connection from a cozy office at home, with occasional travel on short trips. He uses computers a lot in his work, and he also enjoys working on computers as a hobby. He occasionally teaches physics courses at nearby colleges.
Rusty
No description of our home would be complete without mentioning Rusty. He is a six year old golden retriever who has only slowed down a little bit from his puppy days. He's actually one of the (many) reasons we got together. Our first real date was to take him, Nancy's dog, for a walk at a local park. Rusty and Eric quickly formed a close bond, to the point that Nancy now says "He's your dog, I just found him first."
Rusty follows Eric around whenever there's anything to be done. He likes to "borrow" Eric's tools when Eric is working on something -- all of our screwdrivers now have teeth marks on the handles. Rusty always loves to go for a walk, either just around our quiet neighborhood or through the nearby woods and around the college campus. He literally jumps for joy if you say the word "walk", but luckily he has not (yet) learned to spell. He gets really excited when we have company, but now that he's older he calms down more quickly. He's gentle with children, but wants to be included in whatever they are doing. Rusty keeps us on schedule, from getting us up in the morning to making sure Eric stops working at five o'clock.
Our Extended Family
We both come from very close-knit families. Nancy's parents live only a few miles away, in the same house where she and her brother grew up. We see them every week, especially now that they are often babysitting "the babies" -- her brother's little boy and girl, who we love dearly.
Eric's family all live out on the west coast, but we keep in close contact with them by phone and Internet, and we visit about once a year, sometimes more. We had a great time this summer when Eric's teen-aged nephew Matt stayed with us while he worked for Nancy at the college.
Nancy's Family
Nancy's mother works at the same college where Nancy works. She hopes to retire soon, and she's looking forward to providing child care for her newest grandchild, since spending lots of time with her grandchildren is her favorite hobby. Nancy's father is a machinist and toolmaker who works at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He is a Vietnam veteran, so he is especially proud to be working there. He and Eric have become good friends who enjoy working together on household projects.
Nancy's brother Robert and his wife have three small children, ages 5, 2 and 1, who we love dearly. We see them every Sunday when we all go to Nancy's parents house for dinner. Nancy's grandmother lives with Nancy's parents, so on Sundays and holidays we have 4 generations all under the same roof. Everyone is looking forward to welcoming a new child into this loving family.
Eric's Family
Eric is the oldest of four children. Each of his siblings is married with children of their own, ranging in ages from 26 to 8. Eric's parents are now both retired, and they are both looking forward to meeting their newest grandchild. Eric's father was a high school teacher who moved up into administration and oversaw special education programs for the school district. Eric's mother was a social worker who dealt with foster care placement and casework.
Eric's sister Lisa has become good friends with Nancy, to the point that Eric sometimes thinks they gang up on him. Lisa and her husband Mark have three children. They all came out to visit us this summer, though their oldest, Matt, was with us all summer, which we really enjoyed. Eric's brother Grant and his wife have twin girls, who are now grown and both recently married. One is expecting a baby around the holidays. Eric's other brother Craig and his wife have two boys, ages 15 and 9. Eric keeps in touch with the oldest via the Internet.
In short, we both come from large, extended but connected families who will welcome a new child with open and loving arms.
Our Home and Neighborhood
Not long after we were married we found a wonderful house in a good school district within walking distance of the college where Nancy works. The previous owners raised their four children here, and lived here until they retired. We look forward to raising our family here too.
Our neighborhood, which was once an old apple orchard, is on the edge of a medium sized town, but it's still fairly rural. A family of deer usually come through around dusk, and in the spring a flock of wild turkeys often appears in the yard in the morning. There is a small woods nearby on the college property, with a trail through it to an old carriage path where we take Rusty for long walks.
Our house is surrounded by a large green yard, with a few trees here and there and more surrounding the yard. One of the trees in the yard already had a tree house, to which Eric added ladder steps, a climbing rope, and a halyard for hoisting a pirate flag. The back yard also has a permanent swing set. There is lots of room to spare for a good game of Frisbee or whiffle ball. This has all been kid-tested by the children of our friend and extended family. There is no doubt that this is a great place to raise kids.
We both enjoy being outside on the weekends when we can. Nancy plants spectacular flowers choreographed to bloom from spring to fall, like a floral fireworks display. Though she plants many different varieties, Black-eyed Susans are her favorites. Last year we planted some Marionberries, which usually only grow near Eric's home town out in Oregon, and this year they bore their first fruit. After Eric takes care of the yard work he enjoys riding his motorcycle around the rural back roads of New York. We both also enjoy working out at a health club two or three times a week.
