William (Dirk) & Dawn are hopeful adoptive parents from Utah waiting to adopt a baby.

If you are pregnant and considering placing your child for adoption, please read the following Dear Birthmother Letter.

Dear Birthmother Thank you for taking the time to read our letter. (I know it is long, but we wanted to let you know as much as you could about us. ) We cannot imagine your courage and your love for your child. We know that Heavenly Father will bless you and guide you for the choices that are ahead.
This letter is for you to get to know us, so here we go:
We have been married you 10 years and over the years have found our love and appreciation for each other grow through the good times and tough times. We have been blessed with two living children Sydnee and Kyle (a.k.a Buster).
Buster was the name his big sister gave him before he was born, it really fits him better than Kyle. He is a red head that is curious about everything. He goes to work with his Dad every Friday, Dirk works on the farm with his father and brother one day a week and brings Buster with him. Buster has learned all about tractors, building fence, and what Pepsi breaks are for. Buster is liable to be very upset when kindergarten starts and he doesn’t get to spend quite as much time with his Dad, although Dirk will be the one that misses the time they spend together the most.
Sydnee is 8 years old. She loves school and learning. She was just baptized in April. She loves sports, riding her bike, playing with her friends, but her best friend is her brother. They never seem to be complete with out the other. They spend hours with the puppies, on the trampoline, swinging, playing with their Dad in the sand pile where one or both of them will end up being buried up to their necks in sand. Their Dad is such a big kid that sometimes he has to be reminded that he is the father.

Dawn would like to take the opportunity to write about Dirk:

Dirk is a good old country boy. He has old country values. He’s as honest as the day is long and just as hard working. He has tremendous moral values and he holds his family to the same moral code. He expects us to be honest, courageous, true, and hard working. He, himself has worked hard to make it possible for us to live in a great home in the country. He has many horses and dogs and enjoys taking care of them. I love to watch him in the spring when the new colts are born and how careful he is to catch the mom and help her with her new baby.
Dirk loves children and is the first one to scoop up our kids for kisses and hugs or one of the nieces or nephews at Grandma and Grandpa’s house. His size is a bit intimidating – he is 6 foot 4 inches and looks like he might be mean but that is all for show as he is a marshmallow where others feelings and hearts are concerned. (As far as his size I think there is just more to love.)

Dirk would like to tell you a little more about his wife.

Dawn is a very happy person. She finds joy in doing simple things. She likes to cook and do a lot of canning in the autumn. I love that my wife likes to cook. (The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach). She frequently surprises me at work with apple pie for me and my co-workers, sometimes if I am lucky we get homemade bread and jam. They must really like her apple pie because they all pitch in and bought her an apple tree, so she wouldn’t run out of apples. Dawn is not a stay at home mom but she has picked the best profession to be able to spend lots of time with her family. She is a PE and math teacher at the local high school. This way she is home almost every afternoon when the kids get home from school and she gets the entire summer to love her family. She takes the kids with her everywhere and because of this they are not afraid of new situations and have lots of “aunts” and “uncles” that are not in the family. Dawn is very active in sports, she plays, coaches, or referees, basketball, soccer, volleyball, etc. She is also a power lifter and enters competitions where she lifts heavy weights and also competes in Strong Women competitions. Just because Dawn does all these athletic events does not mean she is not feminine. She still makes my heart flutter and I want her with me always.

We truly feel for you. It cannot be an easy decision you are facing. We have had a taste of what you may come to face. We experienced the heartache of leaving the hospital with empty arms- not willing- but our third child, Carson passed away shortly after birth due to a heart defect and other health complications. We each must face great sacrifice in our lives; maybe more than one. It is how we handle that sacrifice that shows our true potential. The loss of our son only made us belief in the importance of family more. The loss bound our family together and the love we have for one another is solid and unbreakable
With the delivery of our son that died, we were told conceiving a child would be highly unlikely: yet we know our family is not complete. This has brought us to the adoption plan.
Our family is our greatest treasure and we love each other deeply.
We would love to welcome more children into our family. We look forward to knowing you better. We are open minded to a new relationship, and pray for you and hope you will find peace in your decision. We hope this letter has given you a glimpse into our lives.
How we met!!! Dirk and I had know each other for several years before we started to date. We went to high school together even though we did not date. Dirk also use to slam my locker when I wasn't looking. I never know it was him.
Dirk took classes at the local Vocational School from my father, he asked my dad to set him up with me several times. My dad always told him he would get his but kicked by me.
Well a couple years after high school I was working at a convenience store and going to college. One night I was working late and Dirk came in. He got his drink and talked to me for a minute. When he got back in his truck his friend bet him he didn't dare ask me for my number, so he came back in and talked to me for an hour and a half before asking for my number. The funny thing was he didn't call me for a month. He had decided to go on the wagon train from Northern to Southern Utah. So when he called I gave him a hard time. Our first date did not go well. He never showed up, he called me and told me his truck had caught on fire. I had never heard that one before, so I gave him another chance. From then on we were together. We dated for 9 months and then Dirk proposed on February 5th. We were married in June that same year. It has been 10 years but it seems like so much less. We enjoy spending time with each other. We love our family and think the best years our yet to come.

Dirk's Background:

I am third in line to the thrown. There is seven of us. I have 2 sisters and 4 brothers. The girls in the family were always out numbered it was fun to torture them when I was younger, but its weird how you want to protect them as they start to hang around other boys.
I was born with a cleft lip and palette. I was missing the roof of my mouth and the front of my lip. So needless to say a spent a great deal of my childhood with my mom in and out of doctors offices. I have a very special relationship with my mother. I had to have a total of 11 surgeries. Some taking me out of school for long periods of time. I always ended up spending my summers in speak therapy or in tutoring. It didn't stop me. I still found lots of trouble.
I grow up on a farm. When I was younger we raised beans and I remember hoeing the rows for weeds. I was so glad when we switched to raising cows, wheat, and hay. Yeah no more hoeing. Growing up on the farm taught me how to work. I enjoy a hard days work and still help on the farm when I can.

Dawn's Background:

I am the second oldest of 4 children. I have two brothers and one sister. I grew up moving around a lot. We moved 4 times before I got into high school. Needless to say I learned how to make friends very quickly. My father and mother owned their machine shop, so I grow up around cars. My dad drove a dragster so we toured the country going to races. I meet so many people and saw most of the country. I still love to travel.
My family spends a lot of time together and it really shows when we get together we have so much fun, just talking and laughing.
I started doing sports when I got to high school. I found I really had a nack for athletics and ended up getting a scholarship to a Division 1 school in Track & Field. They paid for me to get my education in teaching. I was not sure I wanted to be a teacher. My dad, grandmother, and great-grandmother all teach or have taught school. I did not know if I wanted to follow in their footsteps. After my student teaching I knew it was for me. I enjoy teaching. After getting married and having Sydnee I realized I have a greater passion for my family. I love them dearly and would not trade them for anything.
Our Hobbies and Family Time As a family we enjoy many activities. We love to be outside if it cold or warm. When it is warm we enjoy activities like working in the garden, swimming at the local pool, playing with our 10 puppies(hopefully someone will want them soon), riding horses, and 4 wheelers. The kids enjoy playing in the sand pile, jumping on the trampoline, swinging on the swing set, playing soccer and softball , a good game of hide and seek with the neighbors, or their favorite putting the sprinkler under the trampoline.
In the fall there are lots of leaves to play in and have a good times. When winter comes Dirk brings the tractor up and piles the snow in a big mount so we can have a sledding hill that the whole neighborhood enjoys. We always have to have a least one snow fort and lots of snow angels. If there is enough snow Dirk will hitch up "Fred" our horse to the sleigh and we will go for a ride. Christmas is always a great time. We started a tradition to have a pinata and Mexican Food on Christmas Eve. Sometimes it is just us and sometimes it is the cousins and everyone. We always end with the story of Jesus. It is a great night.
We are so lucky to have both sets of grandparents alive. We spend so much time with them. I believe they teach our children important things that we can not. We spend a lot of time over at grandma and papas. With one set a grandparents my kids get to ride in combines and tractors on the farm. They also get to help feed the new baby calves and sometimes see them born (that one was hard to explain). They get to learn all about how to raise wheat, hay, and safflower. With the other set a grandparents they get to learn about race cars, ride four wheelers, fly model airplanes, drive remote control cars, learn to rebuild engines, and how to get really dirty with grease and grime. Also learn how to sew and craft. Grandma loves to make an outfit every year for my little ones. We love to spend time with our extended family.

Dawn's Hobbies:

I enjoy doing so many things. I enjoy sitting down and reading a good book to working in the garden. I love to scrapbook all my families memories. I enjoy playing with my children in the sand pile and coaching their soccer and softball teams. I love to teach, high school students or my children about the gospel. Every Spring we plant a garden and there is something about working the ground and getting yummy vegetables that I like (weird huh). My true passion lies in my weight lifting. I enjoy lifting heavy weights and competing in Power lifting and Strong Women Competition. When I can't lift something Buster calls me a wimp and tells me he can do it. I laugh and believe he is full of it all the way to his eyeballs.
I know this is a weird hobby but God blessed me with this ability and I can't just throw a talent away.
I also enjoy cooking and bottling fruits so we can have them all winter. My kids love to help me in the kitchen its always interesting when we find an extra little something in our meals (luckily no one has got sick). I love my family and the time we spend together.

Dirk's Hobbies:

I enjoy most of all being and doing for my family. If they are happy I am, for the most part, very happy. I work 4 days a week which leaves me nights and 3 days with my family.
I have many hobbies I enjoy. I have several horses and dogs, I have always enjoyed animals. My mom tells the story of me when I was 6 years old. I wanted to ride the horses and she keep saying "When your dad gets home." Dad just wasn't getting home fast enough. So I went and cut yarn and braided it into a rope and went and caught the horse and rode it bareback. I only got in a little trouble, something about me breaking my neck. Every since you could find me on the back of a horse.
I enjoy other things besides my animals. I enjoy a good book and Reading to my kids. I am a Assistant Scout Master and take off a week every year to go to scout camp. I really can't wait until Buster gets old enough to take him with me. I enjoy camping and I set the tents up in the back yard for the kids to sleep in. I really do enjoy work and always have several projects going (Dawn just wishes I would finish some of them)

Thanks for taking the time to get to know us. Take Care,
Dirk, Dawn, Sydnee, and Buster Richards
