Juli's story is quite amazing. She is the first generation of her family to be born in the United States. Her mother was born in Argentina. And her father was born in Cuba. Juli calls herself an "Argentuban." :-) Unfortunately, Juli's father left the family when she was very young, so Juli never got to know him. Juli has one sister, Noemy, who she is very close to. They are only 10 and a half months apart. Although Juli's mother has a good heart, she was so young and unprepared that she didn't really know how to raise them properly. Juli was going down the wrong path in life, but was able to make a change when she met a friend in high school who was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She joined the Church at 15 years old. She got to see how families with faith lived, and it was a really positive influence on her.

One of the greatest experiences in Juli's life has been the opportunity to help raise her nephew, Ivory, who is now 16. Juli has a very close relationship with Ivory. Ivory likes to joke that he is "Blacktino," since he is half Latino and half Black. Ivory is now in high school, but Juli remembers when he was just a baby and changing his diapers many times! Juli has, and will always be, Ivory's cheerleader. Juli also has another nephew, Isaiah. He is just six years old. Juli loves him to death and is sad that she has not lived close enough to him to have the same kind of relationship she has with Ivory.

Juli works as an Event Planner in Washington, D.C. She is able to work from home for two days a week and her organization is very family-friendly. Although she loves her work, Juli would like to be a full-time, stay-at-home mom, and we are working towards that goal.

Fred has also had an interesting life. He has one brother, Matt, who is two years younger. His parents were married in their early 20s after meeting on a computer date. His dad started his career as a musician (a bass player), actually, on his father's side, there is a history of musical talent. Fred himself plays the guitar and started out as a music major in junior college. Fred's brother plays the bass, professionally, and his grandfather played the bass and violin. Although he felt the temptation to become a musician like his brother, father, and grandfather, Fred did not think that he could provide a living for his future family as a musician. So, he went to college. First, starting out in junior college and worked his way up all the way to law school. Now, Fred is a lawyer and looks back on the tough times as moments that helped shape his good character.

We had our first date together at the Smithsonian Museum of American History. We spent hours (really, our first date lasted 8 ½ hours) talking and walking. And we spent a lot of time sitting on a bench in the museum and talking about life.. Later, Fred proposed to Juli in the museum at the same bench. After getting married, we went on an Alaskan cruise for our honeymoon, which we loved! Life has been a whirlwind and truly amazing since we met. We’ve never known we could love so much!

We truly want to thank you so much for taking the time to read our letter! If you would like learn more about us, please get in touch. Our prayers are with you.

Love, Fred & Juli
We're a Fun-Loving Couple! We are a fun-loving couple and have a lot in common and share so many of the same intertests.

One of our favorite things to do is travel. We started our honeymoon by spending a couple days at a beautiful bed & breakfast in Vancouver, British Columbia. Our room had a view of Vancouver Bay. All of the flowers and plants were so beautiful from all of the rain they receive in Vancouver. We visited the zoo in Vancouver and fed some sea otters and watched the dolphins do all kinds of cool tricks. Our hosts made us the tastiest scones that we've ever had. After that, we went on a cruise to Alaska, which was amazing. We saw glaciers and watched giant pieces of glaciers (as big as cars, we were told) "cleave" off and fall into the ocean with a huge splash. We saw eagles flying in the air (they are huge!). And we ate all kinds of tasty food on the ship. We've also had a great time at Deep Creek Lake in Maryland. We took Ivory along with us and spent a lot of time out on the water on jet skis. It was really cool! We spent our summer vacation in Lake Tahoe in California this last summer. Fred had never been there before, but Juli knew how beautiful it is, having lived in California most of her life. Fred and Juli really love music, all kinds of music, and make it a point to go dancing every month. Juli and Fred are big fans of music from the 1980s, like Duran Duran and Journey. At our wedding, we had a string quartet play a version of "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey, which was really cool. We also really enjoy keeping up on current events in the news and politics, talking about them together. Fred and Juli really love animals. We have two of the coolest cats in the world, Crockett & Tubbs. We also make it a point to visit different zoos and animal parks, both at home and when we travel.

Fred

Fred really enjoys the outdoors. There's nothing better than getting out in nature and hearing the birds sing and watching all the different animals. It is so peaceful and refreshing. West Virginia is such a beautiful place, it is Wild and Wonderful, which is the motto of the state. Watching the pink sunset over the mountains, and seeing the wild Potomac River, as it snakes its way all the way from West Virginia to Washington, D.C. is especially satisfying. Fred also enjoys target shooting, which he has done since he was a boy. He takes safety very seriously, and has been certified for his safety skills. He also enjoys doing home improvement projects and is pretty good at them, although sometimes things will hang just a bit crooked. His favorite power tool is his cordless drill. At our new house, Fred has installed chandeliers in the dining room and the kitchen, and he put together many bookcases. He also built a rack that holds our firewood for the winter. Fred started out as a television communications major in college, so he is good at figuring out how to connect up all of the audio and video equipment at our house. He also really enjoys science fiction movies, like Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and Dune.

Juli

Juli really enjoys working on cross-stitch projects; she's working on a very pretty one now from Monticello. She is also an excellent cook and baker. She loves making food for family and friends. She has put together delicious meals for Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving. For Easter, Juli made an awesome cake that was shaped just like a bunny! It was a tasty bunny too. Juli loves to make recipes that her grandmother taught her to make before she passed away a few years ago. One of her favorites is called Tortilla, which is eggs and potatoes cooked up together like sort of a giant omelet. Boy is that tasty. Some of her favorite dishes are Argentinean and Cuban dishes that she ate as a child; she cannot wait to share those meals with our children. Juli also really enjoys learning about history, particularly the Civil War. She is not really interested in the dates that certain battles occurred, but in the social and political background that led to the Civil War. She really enjoys reading newspaper articles and diaries from those times, especially those of women, as that is a part of history that isn’t always told. Juli also loves roller coasters!
Our Families Like everyone here in the U.S.A., we all come from families who came here from other countries. Juli's family comes from Argentina and Cuba, and Fred's family comes mostly from England and Ireland. Juli is the first generation of her family to be born in the U.S.A., which is really amazing. Her grandmother, grandfather and mother came from Argentina, and her uncle and aunt were born in the U.S.A. Juli has family who still live in Argentina and we hope to visit someday. From our family history research, it looks like Fred's family, on his father's side, came to this country from England in the 1700s. His family on his mother's side comes from Ireland. We have a great respect and admiration for our family history. We know that without their courage to leave the places they called home and travel here, we would not have the amazing opportunities that living in the U.S. affords us.

Fred

Much of Fred's life has been spent in the Maryland and Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C., although he was born in New Jersey. Fred's brother, Matt, came along two years later. Fred grew up in a happy and close family, which often struggled to make ends meet. His family was Catholic, although his father did not convert until Fred was a teenager. His father was a musician, but became a restaurant manager to earn a better living. His mom, although she had a degree in psychology, spent much of Fred's childhood being a stay-at-home mom, while doing babysitting and part-time work. His brother, Matt, has a doctorate degree in music and plays the bass in several local orchestras; he has recently gotten married, which was very exciting for the whole family. During high school, Fred had a tough time because he changed high schools three times and his father lost his job. While Fred learned to play the guitar quite well during this time, he felt lost in school and ended up getting his G.E.D. It was at this time that his grandmother died and his grandfather came to live with his family. His grandfather was a musician, and warned him how tough it was being a musician. Fred decided he would get an education, so he went to junior college, American University and then law school. Fred met Juli, and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on the 20th anniversary of Juli's baptism. Fred’s family is really loving and supportive and they are very excited about becoming grandparents and an uncle. When we adopt, it will be the first grandchild and nephew or niece.

Juli

Juli was born in Massachusetts, but lived most of her life in California, in both the Los Angeles area and then the northern part of the state. She lived with her mother and sister, Noemy. Her father left the family shortly after the family moved to CA. Juli's life growing up was not easy. But Juli does have happy memories of the time she spent with her grandmother, especially of all of the tasty food that her grandmother taught her to cook! Juli was very close to her grandmother, who passed away in 2000. She can't wait to share the recipes and traditions she learned from her grandmother with her own children. Although Juli grew up in difficult times much of her childhood, she really began to discover who she was in the last couple of years in high school. It was then that Juli discovered the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In the Church, Juli learned about her value as a daughter of God. It was this knowledge that has really shaped her sense of self. Juli has a great relationship with her sister and her nephews. She and her sister are only 10 and a half months apart, so they are very close. Noemy is very much looking forward to being the “cool aunt” and establishing a close relationship with Juli’s kids, just as Juli has with her nephews. Juli’s mother is very happy that Juli has met the right guy who will be an amazing father for her latest grandchildren. It has been 7 years since the last grandchild was born in the family and Juli’s mom is excited to have a new addition.
