More About Who We Are
To describe ourselves, let's start with our hobbies. We like taking walks, camping, and enjoy travel. We both love books and reading, and take time every year to attend the local Storytelling Festival. We enjoy theater (especially musicals).
We also do regular things like watching movies and television, playing games, and working around the house. We love to have friends over to play "Dance, Dance, Revolution" or "Guitar Hero." Music is a big part of our lives. We both play the piano (somewhat) and Janel sings in a community choir.
About Rich
Rich has a great imagination. He loves to make up stories and songs. He likes Legos and blocks, Sesame Street (the old version)...I know he'll be a great dad! Rich is always learning new things. He loves to study. He's not afraid to try new projects, whether its building a workbench or his own website. He enjoys graphic and logo design. He looks forward to designing our Christmas card every year! Rich also has an extensive comic book collection.
Rich is a big help around the house. I can always count on him to do a load of laundry or dishes when it's needed. Rich also likes to help out in the kitchen. He specializes in making desserts. He is great at fudge, homemade ice cream, and chocolate syrup. (As you can tell, chocolate is a big part of our household.)
Rich has been swimming since he was two years old, and started competing on the summer swim team when he was 7 or 8.
About Janel
Janel is the creative-consultant of the family – meaning she’s good at planning fun things to do, and then putting those great plans into motion.
Janel always plans our family trips and vacations. The same thing goes for her other hobbies. Years ago, when she wanted make an afghan, she went to a craft store and asked them to teach her to crochet. Now, she has made several afghans for friends and family. Likewise, when Janel wanted a new Halloween costume, she had a friend teach her to sew, and soon after used a complex pattern to make the Queen of Hearts costume from “Alice in Wonderland”– and it looks great.
Janel studied opera privately, loves to scrapbook; does cross-stitching whenever she’s sitting down; and tole-paints. She also teaches voice lessons.
How It All Began
When Rich and Janel met in California, we were performing in the Oakland Temple Pageant, and both of us were singing in the stage chorus.
The first things Rich noticed about Janel was her singing voice and her smile. One night after rehearsal, Rich came up to Janel and asked for her name. She told him it was Janel, and he said, “I just wanted to know the name of the girl who’s always smiling.” We started dating after a few weeks, and were married eight months later.
We lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for some time, but finally made the decision to move to Utah. The move was more of a surprise for Rich than Janel. Her family lived in Utah, and she wanted to be closer to them, but Rich was hesitant because he liked the California weather. On his birthday, Rich went hiking, came back a few hours later and announced that we were moving to Utah. Within two months, we were packed and ready to go!
The move turned out well for us, and Janel loves having her sister and her family close by. They talk to each other every day and see each other at least once a week.
Our Furry Child
While we currently do not have any children, we do have a cat that keeps us on our toes. Her favorite perch is a couch in the living room, where she can watch the front door, hear Rich work in his office and listen for Janel when she's working in her craft room in the basement. Occasionally, she goes to Rich's office to look at the birds outside the window, and sometimes sleeps in the sunshine (on Rich's papers, which he usually need when working).
Every night, she follows Janel to bed and sleeps at the foot of the bed. She's really just waiting for Rich to come to bed, though. Every night she snuggles in his arm as he's falling asleep. She also likes to nap on Rich's lap when we watch videos or tv.
Marble is shy of strangers, and loves to hide under our bed when the doorbell rings. However, there are times when she will come out to see who's there; especially if it's someone she recognizes.
We're looking forward to having "brothers and sisters" for Marble!
