Get to Know Us
About James & Stephanie:
We always joked in our families about our “arranged marriage.” It is pretty funny how it came about. Stephanie knew James' family long before he knew her! In fact, his dad liked her so much that he arranged an opportunity for us to meet at a family get-together! James was attending college in Utah while Steph was working in Colorado so, at first glance, it didn’t seem like a very good situation, but since James did make a few trips home for holidays and summer vacation his dad always made sure that Steph was invited over… We laugh about it, but it really was kind of a conspiracy. Needless to say, we DID end up dating, falling in love, and getting married.
We discovered pretty quickly after our marriage that we would be unable to have children without medical intervention. We really weren’t too worried because we thought that medicine could fix pretty much anything. We were disappointed when we discovered that no amount of medical intervention would give us the desire of our hearts - a child. It was then we realized that we would need something different than medicine; we would need a miracle.
We prayed for a miracle…and a miracle is what we received! We had talked before our marriage about the possibility of adoption and we had both agreed that it was something that we would like to do. So, without hesitation, we jumped feet-first into the adoption process. We were thrilled when we were given the opportunity to adopt our daughter Kayley in 2006. Kayley has been such a joy to us and the blessings of parenthood were so much greater than we anticipated. We thank God daily for giving us such a beautiful miracle. We are so thankful to Kayley’s birthmother and the trust she placed in us in allowing us to create our own eternal family.
Together - The Nicest Place in all the World
Our Family:
As a family we stay very busy! To give you an idea of what we like to do, we can give you a brief recap of our last year! In this last year we went to Disneyland, toured a Dairy Farm, visited a Wild West Town, rode a train, panned for gold, visited the Smithsonian, went camping, toured Washington D.C., played at the Children's Museum, visited the Grand Canyon and fed Stingrays! Can you tell that we really love to travel? We enjoy getting outdoors as much as possible, even if it is just for a nice evening walk in our neighborhood.
As a Couple:
We try to spend time together, just the two of us, as often as possible. We understand the importance of nurturing our relationship. We love to just hang out together, going for walks, to the movies, or to the bookstore. We do not get a babysitter often, but when we do, we really enjoy going to dinner and a movie or to a museum or show.
We both love to read, try new foods, hike, camp and hang out with our daughter, Kayley.
About James:
James is the oldest of 4 siblings. His parents are calm and relaxed people who enjoy gardening, reading and other quiet activities. They are a reassuring and loving presence in our family. His sister Susan is a fun-loving kindergarten teacher and his sister Mary, recently married to her husband Jarom, is an administrative assistant. James’ brother John and his wife BreAn are the proud parents of Kayley’s cousins Elijah & Abigail. His family has embraced adoption and love Kayley more than life.
Before finishing college James served a church mission in Portugal. It was an amazing, spiritual experience that has made a lasting impact on his life.
James made the decision to be a doctor pretty early in college. He majored in Biochemistry and minored in Zoology. His natural aptitude for Science and his sincere desire to help people has made him into a wonderful doctor of family medicine today. It is a tough, but rewarding career. Residency has been hard and very busy, but thankfully things are slowing down and less than 3 months from now James will be starting in a practice and enjoying a more stable schedule.
James hopes to one day to start his own business and own his own Family Practice. He enjoys reading, watching movies, traveling, and spending time with his family.
About Stephanie:
Stephanie is the oldest of 2 siblings. Her parents are nutty and fun-loving. They love to travel and really enjoy taking us along with them on their adventures. Over the last year we can attribute both Disneyland and Washington D.C. to her parents’ initiative. Her brother Steven is a hard-working student and plays in a rock band. He is recently engaged and we are looking forward to a new sister-in-law, Jenna. Steph’s family has a couple other extended family members who were also adopted so adoption is very normal in her family. Her family loves Kayley beyond reason and takes every opportunity to spend time with her.
Stephanie joined the Air Force right out of High School. It was one of the best decisions she ever made. It was a wonderful career and offered many opportunities for growth. She separated from the military after 10 years of service to become a stay-at-home mommy. (The other best decision she ever made).
Stephanie also has a master’s degree in Communication thanks to the military tuition assistance program. She worked as a teacher for 4 years before she separated. Someday she would like to go to nursing school and be a nurse educator, but in the meantime she is delighted to be able to stay home with Kayley.
Stephanie enjoys blogging, going to flea markets/thrift stores and finding old “treasures” to refinish, buying and selling on eBay, and just having a good time being with Kayley each day.
Families are Forever
About Kayley:
Kayley is a smart, happy and curious 3 year old. She likes to play, run, jump, sing, squeal (very loudly), yell, whine and eat. She likes to play dress-up and tea-party. She loves her blankie, her sippy cup and Elmo. She is an avid thumb-sucker who just moved into a big-girl bed and is potty trained. Kayley loves everybody, and she likes babies. She would make such a wonderful big sister.
Our parenting method with her is not unique. Stephanie read a lot of parenting books before deciding on a combination of methods to help Kayley be happy and safe. We do not spank or hit. We use time-out and loss of privileges to help Kayley understand the consequences of poor choices. We motivate with special privileges, treats, and lots of hugs and kisses. We are very glad to share that tantrums are rare and Kayley is resilient and willing to share.
Kayley knows she is special to us. We did not want “adoption” or “birthmother” to be a confusing concept to her, so we have told her about these things from the beginning. Even though we know she doesn’t really understand yet, we discuss with her that she has a very special mother who gave her life. We have pictures of Kayley and her birthmother and we discuss them and who each person is. We tell Kayley about how our lives are so happy because she came to us through adoption.
Kayley is growing so fast…every time we blink she has changed. She is such a delight to our family; we love her so much it takes our breath away.
Our Home Life:
We believe our home should be a safe haven and we strive daily to ensure the spirit dwells with us. We have family “scripture study” with Kayley each night by reading a scripture story. We follow this with family prayer and we are learning to fold our arms and be reverent. She keeps us accountable…if we forget, she reminds us!
We currently live in a small apartment. It is smaller than we would like, but it is cozy and home to us right now. We really want to live close to the hospital while James finishes his residency. It has been a blessing being so close to his work; it has allowed him to come home during busy call schedules while other doctors must stay in the hospital. Thankfully he is almost done (less than 3 months now!) and we are really looking forward to buying our first home soon!
While James stays busy in his residency, Stephanie keeps busy at home. As a stay-at-home mommy Steph enjoys helping Kayley discover the world. Kayley recently started attending a cooperative preschool. Steph loves it because it gives her an opportunity to work in Kayley’s classroom a few times a month and Kayley loves it because it is fun! They also go to the zoo programs a couple of times a month for a fun behind-the-scenes interactive program geared towards preschoolers. They also attend swim lessons during the summer and the library programs during the school year.
Being members of a strong church has been such a blessing to us. Although it has been very hard to watch our friends and siblings have babies over the last several years when we couldn’t, the gospel has given us much comfort. We are so grateful to our loving Father in Heaven, we know that he is mindful of us and wants us to be happy.
We would welcome the opportunity to get to know you better.
Sincerely,
James, Stephanie & Kayley
